The Pinegrove has a long as storied history in the city of Carlisle. The main hotel building was built in 1877 for a wealthy wine merchant, and many of its original features, such as the tiled entrance hall and ornate cornices remain to this day. One of our favourite features is the beautiful stained-glass window which was added to the first-floor landing in 1892.
Before it became the Pinegrove, the Victorian property was once owned by the Bishop of Carlisle, who used it as a ‘monk’s haven’. At this time, the building was known as Pencarl House.
The original Victorian house was extended in the 1980s to create additional bedrooms and a function space with a bar, while trying to maintain its period feel. The Pinegrove was purchased by David Middleton and his brother Paul in 2003, and is still run by our family to this day.
As a small family-run business, we aim to provide a warm welcome to all our guests. Our knowledgeable and friendly staff are on hand to assist you, whether staying overnight or just popping in for food and drink.
Just a short walk away from the city centre, you’ll find many great sights in Carlisle, including Carlisle Castle and Cathedral. Venture further afield to discover Hadrian’s Wall, the Lakes, and Border country.
Conveniently located just off Junction 42 of the M6, the Pinegrove is an ideal place to base yourself when experiencing what Cumbria has to offer.
We try our hardest to make sure each of our guests check out with a smile on their face, so if anything isn’t to your satisfaction, please let one of our friendly team know, and we will do our best to rectify the issue.
